I would like to generate some renderings of industrial skids on a white background. I've been searching for a thread by either Hyltom or someone else which outlined the basics of this. Could anyone direct me to that thread. It seems the new forum search function thinks that my search criteria are too vague.

Thanks

Unless you need your model to cast a shadow on the white background I would suggest using sky dome in white or setting up a white material with the max 220 rule (search the forum) and assigning it to a plane parallel to your camera position.

Otherwise I would use the same max 220 white and apply it to a rounded L-shaped backdrop to get a nice feel in terms of hotspots & shadows

I forgot to mention using Skydome in the evironment for the background channel.
Using it for illu, reflect and refract will result in a very dull lighting.

good luck

If you don't need the object to cast shadows on the background, then just render also an alpha channel and you can composite any background you want. Or you can also render out a shadow pass and get the shadow to composite with a background. You can still have your backdrop in the scene, just so it influences the lighting, but hide it to camera. If you want an almost white looking background it's much less hassle just to create it in Photoshop, use the gradient tool to create any gradient you like etc.
