Sometimes I use the burn and gamma sliders when doing a MultiLight presentation for clients.
When they ask for just a little bit more contrast I play with the setttings and perhaps iso and a ML slider and make a screen shot and save a hdr so I can return to the settings similar as bubba said and do that little bit of extra kick in Photoshop.

If I was just presenting final work, I'd leave them at default aswell. Eventhough the Burn slider kann help with hotspots now and then!

Mac has a standard of 1.8 Gamma and PC is 2.2

BTW, when converting pngs/tifs/jpgs to mxi's for lighting always use gamma 1!
Otherwise you will save a blown out version of your emitter texture

Yeah, had the same thing happen to me.

Always wondering why my black/white gradients were looking like crap in terms of lighting.
If you've done it correctly it will look the same in mxed as in mxcl.

Big case of smacking your own forehead when discovering this
