Just can't get the balls on this newton's cradle quite right...........anyone out there got some quick set-up tips?
I want 'silver with a sheen' but haven't nailed it yet.

Did you use the ior files? That would be easiest. You could just load two ior silver files in two bsdf's with different roughness. Mix between them as you wish.

Yes, I agree, play with IOR layers...please figure this out ASAP, Stu  ...this image is going to be excellent!

Thanks Mihai, JD.........yes that's a better idea, looking better already. :)
BTW, if I wanted to make a 'steel' based purely around ior's, what do I use for iron? There appears to be none? A stainless with combined iron [88%] chromium [10%] carbon [2%] plus maybe a few trace elements might look interesting.

in my opinion also if one uses ior ( i used for instance jotero alluminium) the metal in V! are not as good as metals in beta or even rc5

Glebe, your scenes always look so darn cool :) Looking forward to the final, and how this mixed-ior thing works out (had a quick go at making brass myself with....interesting results. Gotta go back to that one...)

Thanks Doc! Here's a nickel/silver combination, not sure about the map controlling roughness......

iron[88%]carbon[2%]chromium[10%]......should give me stainless steel?

Need to see this on some other models, jury is still out.

...looking better...I'm not sure if it's going to work perfectly in a combinatorial way, but the testing is interesting. 8)

The only thing I'd like to see changed is how we can see an HDRI reflection in the spheres, but the backdrop seems to be blocking it out of direct view of the camera...sort of makes the objects feel disconnected from the environment. Does that make any sense?

I think the material is distracted by all the specular reflections from the hdri. Is it in a dome cathedral?

Yep those hot areas are distracting, here's the same 3ior surface on two other models for comparison:
