whoa. bionatics seems to be real expensive ...... ! well i am thinking of investing... but not yet...

i've seen some stuff can be altered for one individual plant, like season, ...

--> can also whole sets of trees be edited in one step ? or replaced to another species without having to re-locate new copies ?

i tried the demo of NatFx for maya, but it would not install properly. it was the 32 bit version on xp 64... may be the problem.

Yes, whole sets can be edited at once. The seeds are pretty expensive, but one seed can create an infinite variety with all the settings. Also, I have used it in max9 32 and max9 64 and both work fine. If you want to see some in a scene, look in my gallery for the "Clarehouse" scene.

One big drawback I have noticed with Bionatics is the lack of pruning. If you want to trim and prune a tree, you have to convert it to editable poly, then manually delete faces... I had to do that to a couple trees in the foreground of that scene.

Also, some of the trees leaf textures do not work right, they can appear purple. Usually I use a leaf mxm for that.

I'm resurecting this old thread because I finally got around to mapping my maple leaf texture to my bionatics maple tree. What do you guys think? I think it looks ok...

Nice leaves.

Maybe some sss in there? I know rendering won't be finished before version 3, but it would add something to them. And variation in leaf colour as Mihai pointed out.

Maybe the trunk could look slightly more varied too.

Trees are the hardest to get right!

how many polys, Bubbaloo ?

can you post an example rendered in maxwell with more than 50 trees ?

This tree has probably around 300-400k polys. It is at full resolution. If I was going to make a scene with many trees, I would definately lower the quality settings!
But... I will try it. :D

ForestPack Pro and Maxwell... A small scene.
Also ForestPack is used to make the grass.

Perfect plugin!

Maybe this is not a good example, but with ForestPack you can have height and rotation variation, multi sub object material which will randomly apply to the forest, automatically created using B/W maps for the scattering...
Maybe it is a matter of the quality of maps used...
Forestpack is ideal for large scenes because of the least polycount possible.

An un-trimmed hedge like that would be difficult to do for me. Now, if it was a bit more trimmed into a rectangle shape, I would create a leaf and scatter it using a rectangular surface.
