I'm sorry but I think that SL isn't the problem in this case.
If you look at the image sequence of the sample 4 (you have see at full size) you can see that maxwell 2 at 5 min, 30 min, 2 h doesn't light the frame of the door. Maxwell 1.7 light the frame at 30 min even if tthe image is noisy.
In fact I see the oposite... but I agree with def4d in this:
Maybe the next release is so new that the light setups are different? I mean they couldn't simply launch the render from the 1.7 file without doing them again?
There are a lot of little differences, in contrast, reflectivity etc
Materials and light setup could differ a bit.

interesting discoveries guys ...
maybe NL can say sth. to those new questions :D

Hi Dear Friends :)

We hear your concerns and you're right there are some differences between two versions.
So, I'll be happy to share you some technical information with you in order to shed some light.

First of all, we're very happy to see you justify this massive improvement in speed.
Thank you for your nice words, it's been really hard achieving these multipliers in speed!
So, your kind words are much appreciated.

There are several questions so far I'd like to answer but, I want to start from the most important
one for us. It's of course, "unbiasedness". Yes, Maxwell Render is still a hundred percent unbiased
engine with no grain of fake, trick, etc. in order to achieve physically correct quality in less time.
Actually, Maxwell Render Team vow for coding this engine with no tricks forever! If you like to
hear something special, I'd be the first one to stop rendering if Maxwell goes biased, there's no way!

So, now I like to answer some of your questions:
def4d wrote:The light distribution has changed, so is the actual unrealistic?
fabrizio_S wrote:mmm.....image 1 and 4 have really different light distribution.....different color contrast.
Can someone of NL Team explain why? Has NL changed the rendering algorithm? Or maybe it's only my immagination....
fabrizio_S wrote:Image 4: the big left door of the forniture has more light details in maxwell 1.7 (I mean the highlight on the frame).
Or above thedrawers...the light (shadows and bright areas) are much more convincing in maxwell 1.7. Maxwell 2 seems to be non
so accurate. And the blue tint of the sky? in maxwell 2 is less than maxwell 1.7.
Actually, there is no single change in light propagation. But, you're right about the difference in mentioned points.
I'm happy to say the differences are all about the huge improvement/fixes in our BRDF model. Together with the
help of your valuable feedback, we detected a few weak and inaccurate points our roughness model has in v1 and
we drastically improved its response to light in v2 in the name of making this engine more accurate than ever.
In the following days/weeks we will be proud to present these improvements to you in a better way.
Hence, we first wanted to focus your attention in the improvement of noise levels and not to worry about the rest.
So, the differences you mentioned above are all about it and the small difference in shadow was about a very important
bugfix in directional sunlight which was making a spot fall off in v1 and not anymore.

choo-chee wrote:imho, who care ?! as long as we get very good realism, I don't care if that 100% physical correct ... ;)
Mattia Sullini wrote:i believe and hope these are optimizations and not biasing...we'll see! :D
Just don't worry my friends. :) One day you can see 5 moons in the sky but, never see this engine "biased" in any way!

I hope you enjoy our announcements and more to come!
A big THANK YOU to all!

Best!

Is that to say the 2.0 release is imminent? :D

Well, I edited it to "days/weeks" as I also don't know the release date, really :)
But, honestly it is not imminent at all. Please, excuse my English about it...
I've meant, yes in the following announcements and yes, they will be before the release ;)

Hi everyone,

Just to clarify: people tend to put their own twist or give their own interpretation to words like "imminent" and "soon", which is why we usually try to avoid them. :)
As always, Maxwell Render 2 will be ready when ready. We made an announcement on the Maxwell 2 page last week and plan for further announcements over the coming weeks/ months, so you can see what the new version is all about. We hope you will enjoy these announcements until we are ready to release the new version.

Thanks for your patience, and stay tuned for more on http://www.maxwellrender.com/version2

Cheers,

Nicole

Hi Guys- Thanks for the updates! I have spent a bit of time recently looking at different modeling programs and just because I have been browsing I have seen a lot of the other rendering programs... Maxwell kicks the lot! So, fast or slow Maxwell is the best that I see out there- 2.0 is just gravy as I see it! So I am happy to wait until NL gets 2.0 ready - I am not going to be jumping ship anytime soon!

Maximus3D wrote:I had a question a couple of pages back about displacement and sss performance in 2.0. Is that something you could answer with exampleimages Tom ? or should i sit on my hands for a few months and hope for the best..
Yes, don't think I missed them back in pages. :) You know... As I said, I'm willing to answer questions about the presented improvements and about the past but, sadly not about the future. I can only make sure everything can only evolve to something better and I think it's a good reason to hear the answer with another announcement. Smile :)

Ok Tom, thanks for your answer. I will try to sit as comfy as i can on my hands until the revleas are presented. :)

Another question more related to the speedimprovements announced. Can you betatesters show us any other examplerenders using glass and other materials on simple objects with rendertimes included so we get to see something more tasty examples of what you guys have produced during your tests of 2.0, please ? NDA's should allow you to do that.
