great news!!

but also one question for the experienced:

with the new memory management...will it be possible to render a multilight scene and have the glare-feature? today this is not possible with human made machines.

Speedproblem?
I have to render 150 hires pictures in 3 Days! There's your darn speed problem right there! Even if you are using 4 mac pros you just know you are going to run into problems.

well, yes, that's precisely what he said. renderers like maxwell do take time to get to an acceptably noise free image. it's the way they work, there's a snowball chance in hell to see maxwell (or any other renderer based on the same technology), spitting renderings in a matter of minutes.

in a nutshell, if you tell your client you can deliver 150 high res pictures in 3 days, and you don't have a powerful enough render farm, and you get into some trouble, then you probably had it coming.

That's true, even though sometimes the times you get to get the job done vary vastly and so far I always managed to get the jobs done! THANK GOD. But a faster mac sure helps to calm me down!

What I'm looking for is obviously not 5min renders but +/- 3x Vray renders. eg. if Vray takes 2-3 hours for an image then Maxwell should come in around 6-9 hours for the same image. I'll even go up to 10 hours but anything over 10hours for a 150 dpi A3 image is ridiculous.

If this is the attitude of most users, that maxwell's speed is acceptable, then unfortunately we're never going to get anywhere. Not every artist out there have bundles of money for render farms and super Xeon and Opteron computers with quad and 2xquad cores. This is my humble opinion.

Also it was said (and most people tend to forget) we will get RS2 (hopefully it's significantly faster) before version 2.0

Anyway, I'm off for now. Happy holidays and happy easter to everybody. Hopefully after the long weekend (at least in South Africa) we'll have RS2. :)

then you use the wrong software. but even with vray , which is way faster this is not possible in good quality with just 4 quads.

you could also wish to drive around the world with your car in 3 days- also not quite realistic, i would take the plane then....

such crazy timeframes are not maxwells fault, sorry.
cheers
stefan

p.s.: i dont know why so many think a unbiased engine can be way faster than maxwell or fry are? both have very similar speeds in my tests, i think the technical limit is given by the cpus not the programming. there is only room for memory handling and things like that, and this is what nextlimit has done. as far there is no other renderengine that is fatser than the both and unbiased in the same quality that can bring us the idea it is possible to make such a engine faster without faster computing power...
all things have pros and cons, for speed there are other options available like vray or finalrender or metalray...

Whats the final for?

Think about compression of the final renderings.

I did over 500 frames for an animation a few weeks ago, and did them all to SL13 which was ample in the cropped size for higher end web use.

The main issue for me was automating it all because I had to render to an output Mxi (saving afterwards didn't allow you to add glare later or merge with other Mxi's), so inputting all the data and setting up each one was a manual affair :(

I already did those 150 renderings in 3 days and have to do the same thing again pretty soon. So I know how to handle the job and are happy that there is a even faster mac pro out now. And yes, normally I wouldn't use maxwell for this kind of job, but since my customer explicitly asked for maxwell I did use it to finish the job.

which is cool, as it is that you managed to make it on time. if they ask for more quality and time it's the price, then I guess you're in the right position to ask for a couple more days the next time around :D

well then i dont want to have your jobs;-)

what you charge for 150 highrez maxwell photos?
at my price that would be at least 150000.-. well if the customer pays that really i would do it too;-)
