In my experience Vray is quite capable of images as realistic as Maxwell. Perhaps mine don't show it that well, but I think it's still true, with a few minor exceptions perhaps - although with a lot more expertise required.

The real beauty of Maxwell is not it's realism, it's the easiness of the process of achieving that realism. YMMV.

I would agree with that statement....I've seen VRay images of such great quality that I would say the images are equal to Maxwell, although my eye picks up something "beyond" in Maxwell (with a well done image) so subtle I'm not sure what it is. But as Brett said, it's the "easiness" of Maxwell to achieve that great image that appeals to me....although it's not that easy, at least I don't have to worry about somewhere a wrong switch setting that's messing me up. For the road I'm on (YMMV  ) I would rather add more computer power than learn the complexities of VRay (although those who taken the time to learn VRay don't think/feel it's any more complicated than Maxwell).

@def4d...what are you talking about with "NL (Holland photrealism) paints"??? Are you talking about Rembrandt, Hals, ???

Please understand the amount of time and meticulous hard work Mike has put into Maxwell Render is HUGE. When he speaks about these things, you can be sure you are hearing from an expert. Trust me on this.

kind of interesting to me you should mention the Dutch realist painters as I feel (and I mean "feel") there is a common ambiance in those paintings that I also see in some of the Maxwell paintings....I mean Maxwell images

The shame is that essentially we seem to be the only ones who supposedly notice. As for the rest of the world, well, I believe they're moving on ..............

My life has far greater meaning than having it subjugated into such a nano-sized subject of importance.
That is simply never something that I am going to allow to happen nor should you friend -- ever.

dear all,

Sorry if my comment seemed in any way offending to anyone.
I meant the work in post like any other matte painting art.
This is also a very difficult task.

Regarding realism... sometimes it's difficult to chose the right approach.
I remember working on a commercial back in '96 when the Silicon Graphics workstations were the big stars.
I was working in Maya's grandpa' that was called Alias Power Animator.
A water bottle was the main subject in the final shot.
I worked days and days to get it right.
After I thought it was the best render I've ever done... I showed it proud to a good friend of mine.
He looked at it with a great deal of respect for all the hard work... but finally brought up the courage to ask me:
" Why didn't you use a photo ?" ....
I was speechless...
Today I still think of arguments...

To reduce all debate to the good old "mine is longer" because... refraction, reflection... objects in mirror are bigger ... is against "Ocam's razor" applied to any individual context based on client, work-flow, habits, budget, feelings, music you listen while you work, Mac or PC, NVidia or ATI, Intel or AMD, IPhone ore RIM, IPod or Zune, Playstation or XBox, Max or Maya, blond or brunette and so on...

So ... I think there are many reasons to use Maxwell Render... at least many that come to my personal mind... if there are other people that find many reasons not to use Maxwell Render they might be right... at least from their personal point of view... But finally this should be the place for those who have all the reasons to use it...

Don't worry, I wasn't offended. I've been at this too long, I have a hide rather than skin now :)

Anyway, no big deal. It's an old argument that pops up once in while for a fresh round. I'm a huge fan of Maxwell and what it can do, I'm just not one of those people who feel the need to join a cult every time they buy a render engine. They are all ways to get there, but some ways suit some better than others, and some suit different projects better than others. To each his own.

I'll just go back to rendering my puppets now ;)
