You might not want to add a bsdf layer because it "dillutes" the sss effect. A working method is to have two or more sss layers weightmapped:

Had you made that animation with MicroStation Kurt?

Thanks guys! I need to project a specific bitmap onto the surface, so a mix of SSS layers will not do in this case I guess.

If adding a BSDF layer ruins the SSS purity, then I suggest to add a bitmap option to the new SSS, next to the colors.

Recent postings are inspiring!

Just had to add my own... What I'm seeing with these new sss materials is light getting to the inside of the object -- the chrome material on the inside of the fastener is now getting light!

This image doesn't use sss:

Here my SS tests, Seems the dragon is popular at the moment
Anyway simple scene setup and Jelly/Jam SSS.

jvanmetre: I like those components with the chrome showing through the sss material.

4 HeRo and Becco_UK-

Thanks for kind words...I'd like to have clearer resolution on the silicone material, but I think it's the nature of the material or possibly poor lighting.

I think I need to find a dragon.

Maximus3D wrote:Tom:  lotsa great looking examples you posted. I especially like the quad-group of materialballs and Jotero's bust, the sss on that one is real sweet. And finally the milk example, yep you nailed it :)
Thanks Max!

Thanks plumet!
pluMmet wrote:Tom could you give the settings for this
I really don't remember the white balls but red one was Candle Wax. White balls are maybe made of default settings initially comes with the creation of a new SSS layer or something very close.

Thanks Metin!

Preferably -depending on how heavy you need the pattern visibility- I'd suggest an additional BSDF but KurtS is technically right. If you're after multicolor candles with distinguishable patterns or gloss variances you should build all waxes on a separate SSS and weight them. But if your texture is a complicated picture with no wax blending sense a BSDF could be convincing, too. Well, it depends...

jvanmetre, those bolts are really nice!

4 HeRo, your dragons rock as well!

This was a first quick go with the new sss. Thrown a quick framework together and covered it with the sss object. the Maxwell sss is likely to make a nice clear doped linen effect of old aircraft.

Tom, thanks for the added info. Any chance of having a texture map option added to the SSS layer? If several combined layers with different colors are already possible, then coloring using a map shouldn't require too much extra coding I hope.

You mean Maxwell Studio? Do you have a version we don't have? :-)

No... it's just the 2.0 beta...

(just kidding - this small animation is made using studio 1.7 and moving the camera manually)

my take is that having weights or having colors maps is a big difference.. so it is not possible right now... but adding a bsdf works..
