First test. Four different leaf materials with a touch of SSS applied. Used Onyx Tree in 3ds Max. Need to do some more work with the bark though - not to happy with this version. Will also play with some different leaf textures as well.

Thanks! What kind of snags are you running into? I'm more than glad to help out. I've hit a lull in inspiration for any new work, so I've got plenty of time on my hands right now...

very nice pictures, michaelplogue !!

is there a way to bend the foliage a little so they a little less obviously flat ?

next to the flat leaves, there's only the polygonal stem/branch shaping (~ 10 polys around the radius) that shows the cg character.

well, let's hope for displacement soon !

maybe an OT question:
is it preferrable to use an hdri map to light an exterior scene just to get a little more natural lighting color scheme ?
how's the footprint when adding an hdri ?

A "quick and dirty" test - and by no means the most realistic looking tree
around - but here is my test made with the Ivy Generator.
A free and fast solution.

The Ivy Generator can be used for more than just Ivy. Within few minutes
you can produce a series of trees, all different. All render-ready - you just
have to exchange the ivy leaf with something more tree like...

Does not look to convincing as a naked tree, but once covered with leaves it looks a bit better.

can't wait for it !

i hope i find some time to render more trees soon !

Hey guys,

I just wanted to post a real good link by the artist Cristobal Villa that I came across a while back. ( he is an Electric Image user)
He provides some insight on how he created the trees/leaves for this project.

Check out the "Final Stills" and the "Making of" in particular.
