Hey, that makes a huge difference!! Spot on!!!
I changed my displacement map to 16bit tiff (from 8bit jpg) and as you can see it does miracles!!
Thanks Max & Mihai. :D

Hi,

Here is a material I've been working on - stacked slate wall. I want to add an extra layer with sparkling tiny cristals which roughly cut stone has, yet I'm not sure that it should be reflective or just very bright layer.
Maximus I've seen your snow material and you seem to have some experiences with making sprakly particles, any suggestions?
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks.

contact: Nice to see that solved your problem :) and the results look promising, hope we get to see what you're creating there soon.

Pawel: Oh that stacked stonewall looks good already  good work so far! now to create those sparkling crystals in that stonematerial hm, it's a bit difficult as i first of all think those types of stones are quite diffuse with only a minimal amount of specular highlights on them and i also think it could be tricky to create a map that would show up well on that . Anyways, basically what you could try to do is create a map with what would represent tiny crystals of different sizes, greytones and intensities (obviously) and add that to a secondary layer in your material then boost it's nd value alot and add some reflectivity and that's about it.

But if those sparkles will show up that's a different story once you create a scene outta this or use it elsewhere but in the materialpreview render, i run into some issues with that myself today so i dropped the project for today to give my braincell a rest and resume work on it tomorrow. However you may be more successful than me on this, i just think you chose a tough material to add such small barely visible things to. I think they will dissapear in the rest of the colorful rockwall you got there.

Btw, this one is for the contest isn't it Pawel ? :) o and isn't this your first contribution to the displacement thread ? then welcome to the displaced thread hehe

Maximus3D:

Thanks a lot for your recognition and tips.
I've been doing some test with particles maps but with a very little succes. You can hardly see it, maybe because of low SL. I'm aware that those sparkles won't be seen from distant view and that's way I want a separate layer which you can turn on for close-ups. I will post some test as long as I get expected results.
...and yes, it will be one of the contest materials I prepare, so you will enjoy it soon

Hervé:

Thanks man, it motivates me even more.

Maximus3D: Nice displacements! Would you mind describing which method in ZBrush you used to create those maps and which settings you used (Displacement Exporter 3 or directly via Tool->Displacement?) I´m able to create nice displacement maps for mental ray (maya) (32 Bit ones) but I still haven´t figured out which settings to use to get working maps for maxwell...

Thanks a lot in advance,
Marco

Pawel: Anytime :) i'm looking forward to see your final results when you're finished with that rockwall material. Please post it when you're done with it.

Teabag: :D hehe indeed, it's a ton of fun to mess around with this displacement. Pretty much anything can be done with it.. the only obstacle is inspiration and creativity. :)

marcotronic: Hi and welcome, i see this is your first post :) what i did was pretty much straight forward, i exported it with the default settings in the Displacement Exporter as a 16bit TIFF from Zbrush 3.1 to Maxwell. And the displacementmap was generated with the Adaptive setting on. Then i had to flip the map vertically i think it was or else it would otherwise apply reversed when mapped onto my mesh in C4D. If i get a chance i will recreate a better example before Christmas and post that here.

[Edit] : I just finished this caviar type material, or salmon fisheggs as the're most likely called. Two versions below, one brighter and one darker with different displacementmaps on each material.

Wow - nice one Max. I d-loaded that snow mat, but haven't had a chance to try it, but it looks great. Best snow mat I've seen - I think you may have surpassed Jeff Patton's Mental Ray snow ;)

Thanks a lot Maximus3D!

Would you tell me the quickcode you use for the export out of Displacement Exporter in ZBrush (e.g. DE-HBEK-EAEAEA-R16)?

Thanks again,
Marco

EDIT: That caviar looks cool! :)

Metin: Hehe thanks (you'll get a sushi shader next week) :D or i should let Hervé do this type of food creation, he is the real expert at that.

m-Que: Delicious isn't it, love to eat that stuff! :)

Brett: Thank you :) oh sounds good, i haven't seen Jeff's snow yet but i seen some of his other mental ray work and he is talented so i can only imagine how good his snow material must be  btw, if you run into any troubles with the snow let me know so i can fix it if there are issues with it and provide support for what i delivered. Btw, thanks for downloading my material. :)

marcotronic: No problem and thank you :) sure the quickcode i use is the default one DE-JBAK-EACADA-D32 and now i see that's for 32bit export but oh well it worked for me in my first test. Please post your displacement results here so we all get to see what you create and how successful you've been.

I'm not a great fun of caviar but your makes me want to try again  . Well done Max.

Here are some test I made since:

To much and disturbing...

This one I found most satisfying.

The problem is that to make those sparkle/mika sharp and shine I need to pump up ND value and lower roughness, but as soon as there is something to reflect (sky for example) which is not bright the whole efect dissapear. Any comments are welcome.
