Hi Oz,
thanks for all this info for jewellery rendr, I am just starting, there is not a singel jewel render tutorial around,
this post will help me. I got some confidence now to start, shortly I will post my render, only the diamond render takes
forever. I am at sl20, still diamond is not clear, anyway I will post it.

question
what watt should I set my emitters and how far
should I scale my object ?
the dazelling lights what watts
many thanks
Phillip.

1. Think real world -- I just use standard wattages. Anything from 40w - 100W has always been fine for me. Just remember that the scale of the emitter panel size affects the intensity of the caustics or lackthereof. Experiment.

2. No. It's not necessary. If you do then all your other settings have to get skewed, lens mm, f-stop, lighting etc.. It jut gets problematic and makes it difficult to standardize your setups. You would find yourself thinking, "hmmm.. how big did I scale that thing from that one render I did ? ... did I scale the emitters ??? hmmm... I forget." ... lol Just keep things real and you'll be able to set things up fast, ..with or without a template. (Templates are a good idea though --- pre-modeled scenes/emitters/hdrr's/backgrounds etc....)

3. Not sure, never used a dazzler. But it would seem that a brighter intensity would make sense.

If you have a direct link --- paste it in the message, .....highlight it and click the [Img] button. Should work...

Using Imageshack: After the upload,... just copy/paste the forum link -- This is the one that works Hotlink for Forum(1). link.

About the image --- The diamond looks pretty good, ..but the ring needs a little love. It's just flat, .. at this point I'd start trying out different HDR's to get some reflection in there.

You can also add some kind of texture to that ground plane for some 'cheap' reflections.

I see you used a warm emitter temperature --- add another emitter, but make it cold. Blending the two via multi-light yields some nice results.

One of my general methods is to find an HDR, ..get that set. Then place small intense emiter panels somewhere left and right of the ring --- I also add a back fill light that doesn't directly hit the ring. So when I'm on the multi-light sliders, ... All lights get turned off. Then, .. I raise the HDR till I just see some interesting reflections (not too bright). Next, ...bring up the rear light till I have a nice silhouette of the ring. When that looks good, .... I bring up the main left/right spots to balance the overall frontal lighting.

I'm really quite new at rendering my jewelry. After much experimentation and research here on this site and others, a peek at some of my work.

This was done at 700x420 to 16sl. I know I've still got quite a bit to learn. All comments are welcome.

Hello Ivox,
took me some time to do this, see what you think,
I have used Hdri, emitters, left top at 6500, righttop at 3000 back 6500 color corrected
to get reflection, following as you have suggested.
I cant figure out where the triangle reflection is comming from & I dont know all environment settings.
image setting I got it, what about background, reflection, refraction, illumination
here is my second render at 19sl, I kept the same model as before.

Phillip ... would you mind posting a screen shot of the setup ? Perspective ....

I kind of want to see where/how/scale of the emitter panels are .. Also, ..could you show the camera in the viewport.

* Split the perspective viewport vertically, make one active, hit F6, go back to the other 'perspective' and then do a screen shot from there. The camera will be visible in a perspective --- otherwise all you'll have are ortho views to choose from and I don't want that.

or if your comfortable, .. zip up the rhino file and upload it somewhere--- I'll look at it, make some changes and you can study that. That'd probably be most efficient.
