the lamp really looks great. how long does it take to render?
and what causes the dithering artefacts on the foot of the lamp?

It's an animated GIF. GIF only supports 256 individual colours with 8 bits per R / G / B. So each of the images only has 256 colours, hence the dithering.

Hi All! thx for compliments.
dithering caused gif extension as johann. dugge explained

It cooked about 3or4 hours on 2XQ6600 @ 3Ghz

Lamp cover has subtle bump in SSS layer and another one in "diffuse" layer that is why it is not so noise free, but without bumps it clears resonably fast .

IES is some light distribution data about how the light coming from the lamp is scattered and how it looks at the wall

SSS is SubSurfaceScattering and defines how light propagates through material.

For example:
1. put a flashlight behind your hand and switch it on - you can see some red bright portions in your hand - that's SSS
2. Put that flashlight parallel to a wall, perhaps 30cm from the wall and put it on - the light pattern (bright stripe, shaded, bright....) at the wall that's IES

So NO, this is not the same.
Use google and you'll find some examples.

(Edit: I know you didn't mean it honest but made fun of zdeno, but maybe someone might need these hints.)

it was a stupid joke, and your hints are certainly useful. And zdenos examples are great!

Yep ! It was my mistake I post my IES test in this thread, thinking this is "my own" old thread (2 hours of sleep - little child of mine) . Happily Kurts show me how much wrong I was. I was so ashamed I took those pictures out in a big hurry. Again I apologize for all this riot and chaos.
