You can get some unpredictable results if you use Hidden to GI, some odd shadows or reflections that look 'out of place' with GI off. It depends a lot on your camera view, many times it can work ok.

hmmmm, havnt experienced this yet , but it seems the only way to make glass act 'properly' in an architectural context.

I agree, hidden to GI will sometimes not work out as realistic as you like.

But what is the effect of AGS and "hidden to GI" compared. In other words what is really lost compared to real glass in both cases.

AGS does'nt refract light, and doesn't produce refractive caustics
If you want real effects, use real glass + emitter

I thought so but what are the real effects in a rendering. In architecture these effects are sometimes not at all seen. But the closer you are to the glass the more you begin to feel its fake without these natural effects. Anyhow, a dark shadow is never good looking and not natural as well. So we are a bit stuck still. At least we can fake it more or less as I begin to see.

Can you explain how you set up your material "real glass" with an emitter.
thx, Francois

nothing special, just use a glass preset on a box window, and a tiny far plane emitter (old Maxwell School)

Hi, I'm not sure I understand. What effect do you get when using "real glass with an emitter"? And where should this emitter be placed in the scene?

Thanks,

There was a time when Physical sun couldn't produce refractive caustics through standard glass, we were used to replace it by a tiny far emitter...
It seems it works now, so forget what i've said

Can someone please write down in simple and clear steps how to make a glass plane render with realistic shadows on the ground i.e. lighter shade from its face than its edges ? thankyou
