I don't exactly know.
I know it casts fairly hard shadows, but so would a small (point) light source. It has a nice radial falloff when aimed at a subject, but so would a point source enclosed in barn doors.
One difference between a collimated beam and point source rays is the inverse square law. You don't get ISL falloff from a beam of parallel rays.
Hurrell used fresnel lenses in his glamour photography to very nice effect. But ISL falloff is pretty sexy too.
My main goal is to understand the different looks better, and to 'eye match' live action lighting to Maxwell lighting. (regardless of whether or not the light modifier is literally copied.
