I have been using Hyperfocal HDRI skies. The hi res skies. They work great, but just dont quite get the contrast between sunlit surface and shadowed surface. And unless you can match the sun postions perfectly, you end up blurring the shadowline because you get two shadows lines slightly offset. Its definitely alot of trial and error and I just thought maybe there is some logic behind the settings of HDRI + Sun. I guess it is currently an arbitrary process that requires some artistry.
