How many people have been screaming for this feature?!?!?!?!

This has got to be the most fantastic news of the week yet!

Yeah, HDR images!!!!
Well, it is in the topic title and all. woohoo.

It was the aliasing artifacts that got my attention. They still haven't been explained. If it's due to bad jpeg compression, then can we see the full res version please?

Sorry, Frances...
I thought I could tell they are not about JPG artifact.
The actual compression level you see is capable enough not to hurt the image.
And this is the actual resolution and output of the render, not changed.
I understand your rightful complaints about AA and I tried to tell the conclusion with one of my previous post on this thread.

tonfarben wrote:Oh no! Not that old bad "kitchen probe" again! Tom, nevermind, you simply cannotproduce a good image whith this map. It is so overdone, and every reflection I see where this HDRI is reflected looks odd to me. I don´t like these orange yellow tones in the image.
Maybe it is just "the worst HDRI" of the intrnet?

Would you mind rendering the same picture with a better HDRI? There are so many out there that are much much better in quality and size.

..hehe I hope you don't see my kitchen.mxi test then
:D

As I stated before, I have not seen aliasing in MW images unless they were post-processed. So the aliasing issue is new with this build? Or is it a "feature" of using HDRI?

No it isn't new to this build, there are aliasing issues like Hervé explained, where very light areas (highlights) are visible in dark areas. This issue was present before. But it needs further testing, I'm not sure how digital cameras handle these situations either....

Maybe a stupid question , but does the hdr image you are loading in the viewer should be in Lat_Long... or Mirror... or lightprobe...

if you are doing tests right now, please share...

I did some tests with some hdr from Doschdesign, well, I put intensity to 20, and the hdr looks good, then save as MXI, and load that in the emitter, set luminosity in LW to 100.000 % and I get a low grey image, and set to 1.000.000%, the lighting is OK, but the background is white..

I have a sphere mapped with the hdr, and emitter material...

my findings are...

in inverse tone mapping I set Gamma to 2,2
intensity to 30 (with Doschdesign probes) I let it to Lat Long mapping...

I also save a TGA of the hdr to map it in LW in the Color channel, as well as the luminosity channel, I put emitter material, I load the same image, but in MXI format, I put Luminosity slider to 1.000.000 %.. after all it is the sun... he he..it is working kinda good except the spherical mapping seams to be broken ...

BTW, I am trying different positions of my sphere, to see if the emitter bases its light the same....

Ha! Herve, I even posted in that thread about the bed.

The problem was with specular highlights on thin elements and the solution was simply to render to higher res, right?

And for the record. I think that Tom's friend modeled those forks quite nicely.

OK yes render bigger will cure th AA Frances...

nobody is trying the hdr... com'on holly people...

apparently even if you orient your sphere the emitter part does not care... it is mapped by default... Am I wrong...

indeed, not so much difference with a low range image... I have a contrated one (number 50 Tom) and the high contrast is just not there...
