I'm having a problem recently with auto focus and focus to functions working. they are setting focal distance to .001 - .008
any ideas?

This has been a bug since 1.7 was released. I sometimes end up having to manually adjust the focal distance in the camera settings. Whats amazing to me is that you me and only a few other people have reported this here on the forum. Do a search on autofocus or camera focus to find those threads. I often wonder how many people here on the forum actually use studio, because it still has a lot of issues and bugs that kill workflow. The bugs are like the whack-a-mole game. They get one fixed and another pops up with every update. Hopefully 2.0 will work smother.

Use a shaded display mode to make it work correctly.

I have tried that it doesn't matter what you do the focus just goes crazy like that sometimes. It seems to happen most often on closeups like you are showing in your screenshot. Try hiding every object except the one you want to focus to. I think that fixed it one time for me. Other times it did not matter. Its so random I could never pin it down to a specific thing that was causing it.

It started out as a dual monitor issue with certain graphics cards I think. People I know were having issues with the high end quadro cards and dual monitors. With the latest version it happens to me also. The 00 focus sometims as well as just a stuck autofocus. Also when it does work it takes about 10sec for the autofocus to kick in.

i have a dual monitor setup, with an Nvidia quadro PX 570.
i wonder if it has something to do with it?

It might not hurt to swap out the card if you have another one lying around the office to test. The card causing issues here was Quadro FX 3700 – 512mb on a dual monitor setup. With 1.7 release though I have the same problem on my home pc with dual monitors using a gforce 8800gts So again I dont know if anything will fix it until there is another release. If you make a new camera and zoom out from the object and try to autofocus does it happen?

nope, in fact since this first started, the autofocus and focus to have completely stopped working
