Select the object and mark "hidden from GI" perhaps?

What I would do is render that object seperately with even lighting with an alpha so you can do what you want with it in photoshop. Turning off shadows is not possible in Maxwell I think. Can you turn off shadows on your camera?

Hidden from GI will not make it cast shadows, but the object itself won't render the same as with GI turned on. What is it you want to do exactly, perhaps you can do the same by hiding the objects around it (hidden to camera) and you will get the same thing.

I tried something similar recently and placed a plane under an object to avoid any light coming from underneath. Then tried to hide the ground plane from the camera though i think that function is broken in 1.7.1. It was always still there in my render!

Perhaps there's an issue with your Maxwell installation or the configuration, you seem to have lots of problems including not being able to move/rotate objects. That's not a difficult bug to spot if it was a problem for any of the testers. Perhaps you're not in object selection mode when you try to transform the objects.
