Well, we just had a new server built with oodles more space. Yay.

Now unfortunately I've only just realised Maxwell paths were network relative, not mapped drive relative, so I have many hundreds of materials to reset to the new locations, very very time consuming and basically a complete PITA!

Is there any way to FORCE Maxwell to go to say V:\maps\*.* rather than \\bigserver\maps\*.*

If we change server again, or split servers, or whatever else we might want to do, it seems mad that I have a library of mxm's that are all pointing at a server that just doesn't exist anymore, wheras I can always map my V drive to any server location!

Thanks

you can copy all your materials and fix the texture paths.
In MW you can set a directory for textures as well, but afaik you cant make MW replace all materials and textures with ones on a specific location.
Not 100% sure, but I guess someone will know for sure.

A work-around is to use "pack and go" - this will replace all textures with copies placed in a specific folder.

Ah yes, I've made extensive use of this feature. Must have forgotten it for a sec :)

As I posted into an other thead yesterday, there is some kind of bug if you're trying to replace old textures. But for a first time this should do it!

In Studio: Edit > Preferences > Paths > set paths for materials and textures.

Also some plugins let you specify some locations where to look if something is missing.

i've written a MEL script that does exactly this for each texture file ... but i guess you're not working within maya ?

Nope, I'm a Max user...

It's just one of those things, all my max files have referenced libraries, but because I can't turn on viewport textures without copying out the referenced item to the material editor, it's a slow process of editing my material libraries for the new texture paths, saving the materials, and then re-loading the materials into any scenes I re-open to work on.

Just seems a naff workflow for now... :(

I'll just have to go through them all again, but hope that absolute paths are added (not sure why they are not, nothing else uses network names paths here at work, otherwise the whole business would come to a halt!)

:)

Instead of going through all the materials, did you try adding that path to the Studio prefs? MXCL will use those prefs when looking for textures as well.
