Hey,

I have a photo of a building, and i want the rendering camera to match it as closely as possible...

How best to do this in mx studio?

is there an option to overlay a photo onto your viewport to assist in it?

convert the photo to an mxi in mxcl.
Load as image based into environment settings.
In background select screen mapped.

It won't be easy, do you have some info about the camera that took the photo? Focal length, sensor size. There is a photo matching tool in 3DMax if you have that.

3d max is probably the best tool along with microstation.

I have done a couple of maxwell renders in 3D Max which needed to be mm perfect for Appeals and such. As Mihai suggests, you need to have a fair few continuity points and basically you have to set up the same camera in Max as the one which you took the original photo. I would be careful though, as unless you took the original photo with a full frame camera, the lens will need converting.

Cheers,

in the EXIF you can find the focal lenght. Don't forget to set the film back to the real size of your sensor.
