Yes, it works. Although the quality depends on your incoming source image. You know, converting 8 or 16 to 32 is not making it a real high dynamic range. You could consider joining multiple exposures first.

as Tom said, Photoshop does it this way:
File>Automate>Merge to HDR;
then browse for the files containing the different exposures.

If you are not sure about your F-stop/shutterspeed and ISO, you might need to uncheck the "Attempt to automatically align source images" and then input directly your image's data... the easiest way is to choose the middle exposure (EV 0) and then assign the desired EV to the other images.
