How would I create a material that works like a computer monitor emitting a small amount of light. I've been trying but can't seem to figure it out.

I've done this many times, it is nice and easy.

Render a simple plane with your screen texture aplied on it, skydome, lambertian material. Let it cook until level 10, maybe 12 it is nice.

Save you render as a HDR file, and than use it as the emmiter source in the emitter tab of your screen material.

Done !!

Told you was easy... and looks nice too. you can add a reflective layer on it also, looks good too.

or just load the screen texture file in to mxcl and save it off as an mxi file and then use that as an image based emitter in your scene.
