On XP 64... Dell Precision T3400 Quad core.

I had both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Maxwell 1.6.1 installed on this machine.

Before attempting to install Maxwell 1.7 (64) I went to the add-remove programs function... But there was no Maxwell (or NL) application in the remove programs list. So instead I took both the 32 bit and 64 bit application folders from windows explorer, put them in the recycle bin, and emptied. Then I restarted. Then I installed Maxwell 64bit. Then I place my "license.dat" file in the new Maxwell directory, alongside the application. Then I restarted again. Upon launch of Studio I get two errors:

"Material preview disabled" "The material preview scene cannot be found"

followed by:
"Material preview disabled" "The material preview scene cannot be loaded"

I click OK on these two errors and Maxwell Studio launches... but without a "splash screen, and no "docked" palettes of any sort. If I click "about" under the Help menu, nothing happens. Then I went to select my license file by going to Help->License... then picked the license .dat file. Since doing this I've restarted a couple times, and tried to reselect the license file a few times.

If I try to render it tells me "This is an unregistered version, please enter a valid license."

THEN, I went back to the add-remove programs and this time Maxwell was there to remove, which I did. I restarted the machine again and followed all the same steps as above... and I get the same error and symptoms.

Now I am re-downloading the installer to see if that fixes it...

I discovered Maxwell's uninstallation thingy is in the start bar/nextlimit etc yesterday, maybe check your application data directory (hidden by default), delete the nextlimit folder C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data. I cant find it now but uninstalling 1.6 might have taken care of that, that on windows XP, different for every OS.A stab in the dark but it might be worth a shot.

Cheers

The Maxwell license dialog says I can use either .dat OR .txt versions...

The .dat file worked fine in 1.6.1.

Is anyone else (successfully) using the .dat files anymore?

Also, the error messages I get occur BEFORE the application even launches and BEFORE I try to add the license which makes it seem like a separate issue.

Since I posted this thread this morning, I located the "Uninstall Maxwell" tool in the maxwell directory, successfully uninstalled the app, restarted, re-downloaded the 64 bit installer, and tried it all again, only to get the exact same behavior.

Hopefully NL can help me here! I'll be trying the 32 bit installer on the same machine in a minute.

The .dat file should work fine, that's what me and many others are using.

Maybe you have some crap left in the registry from your old installation which was not properly removed when you uninstalled it. I don't know..

OK,
Problem solved, but not sure which factor fixed it...

I just ran the 32 bit installer... BUT did not launch the application when it was finished.

Instead, I decided to try something else thanks to Kurts post... I went into the Maxwell 64 bit application directory and noticed that there was an empty license.txt file that was installed with the app... AND the license.dat file containing my serial number that I put there. I deleted the empty .txt file, launched the app and Voila, no errors, and it all looks good now.

Two possible solutions here... one, the 32 bit installer fixed something, or two, Maxwell didn't know what to do with both a license.txt AND a license.dat file. This is understandable, but a bit frustrating to troubleshoot.

Hi Matt,

It seems that something was (and maybe it still persists) wrong in your installation, probably due having 2 versions installed, or due to a wrong uninstalling process.. at the end what it's happening is that the MAXWELL_ROOT environment variable not found or is pointing to a folder different that the one where you have installed Maxwell. Go to http://www.maxwellrender.com/ click in Support->FAQs->Installation , you will find the steps to check if your variable is pointing to the appropriate folder, where there must be located all the contents of the package plus the license file.

Regards,

Juan

I fixed the environment variable as you suggested.

Maxwell Studio and MXCL are working fine by themselves, but I can't get either one to work with FormZ 6.1.2.
