I had an old v.1.7 glass texture that created lots of bright caustic spots. With scattering turned on the render was unusable because of those spots, with scattering turned off I got black bars across my renders. Replacing the faulty texture fixed my problem. Perhaps you also have a texture that needs re-doing?

yeah, it must have been one texture. I swapped them all with new ones and now it worked.

black bars can appear if you have materials with multi layer set in additive mode without a layer in normal mode.

Really? I haven't ever seen that one. I was under the impression that Maxwell automatically treats the bottom layer as "Normal".
