my fz scale is metres but i need to set import preferences in maxwell to .01
to get the correct scene scale.
Is this correct ?

Yes, that is correct.

When set to metric, formZ uses the centimeter as the basic unit and stores all data in centimeters.

When you set Meters as the "Working Unit" it merely changes the units that are shown in the formZ display.

Maxwell uses the meter as its basic unit - thus the scale conversion factor of .01.
