It drives me crazy. I cannot render textures at all. The funny thing is, that the new plug-in exports everything nicely to mxs. Workflow is easy and stable again. But it renders a textured object black when I hit the render button of the plug-in.

But when I open the same file in Studio and switch to textured mode, it shows the textures. The same in preview mode of Studio. This should mean the texture is there and behaves correctly, right?. But once I hit the render button, the object renders black in Maxwell again.

Any idea, what the problem could be (I know someone was suggesting something like erasing a temp folder??, but don't know which temp folder)

If maxwellZ manages to save a file (usually errors over geometry & textures no matter what). I've only managed to save some cubes successfully so far.

The bsdf reflectance (0) resets itself to black. I think there is a bug, where even after correcting each material it still resets to black. This sometimes happens with files from other applications too.

A colleague sent some obj's saved from SketchUp which work well, though textures need to be reapplied.

My guess that this is mostly an RC5/G4 issue.

And yes, it's driving me crazy too!

Thanks for the reply. But I don't have that bug you are talking about. No setting resets with me...

I have no problems so far exporting .obj to studio either. Check my post with settings on

It seems bugged indeed, maybe we should ask Juan about the issue. I tries everything, scales, normals, reapplying materials, channels etc. It does only render black in Maxwell, but still the preview mode and textured mode in studio shows a very nicely illuminated textured surface...aargh!

Also here: A rhino and pc user friend says no problem.

Are we supposed to be the beta tester???????

very weird. It suddenly works. only difference is that the preview is suddenly yellow and the maxwell render textured. Before it was the other way around, preview mode textured and maxwell black (don't have proof of the previous as I didn't save a screenshot, but it happened around five times, the sixth time it is as rendered). No logic to it, so no need to discuss it. Just hope, that maxwell gets more predictable (logical) one day...

Thanks for the tip saving obj from formZ - but for now I will stick with Lightwave avoiding uv maps.

It's taking me longer to set up scenes than it is for Maxwell to render them!!

workflow:-

model in formZ - export lwo
put placeholder texture in colour channel and set maxwell plugin parameters
load mxs into studio and reapply all textures & emitters
check for missing or black objects
try to bring in as obj from another application.... Modo
reapply the textures
hope it renders
hope it doesn't crash while rendering
hope I don't need to use computer for a few days
hope it saves the render
spend hours removing the noise in photoshop

You have to laugh....

I think I solved my texture problem:

When I add bumps in the formZ material settings (tried rough so far), the texture renders in Maxwell, once I hit the render button of the formZ plug-in. If I remove the bump again, the object renders black again. I cannot explain the relationship of formZ bumps and maxwell texture render, but it works.

Please try yourself and confirm if you make similar experiences.
