emitter can applied to hair and particles and it's good if it can applied to openvdb to create fire ; explosion ; flame

adding plane or hidden emitter can not give real result ;and actualy the maxwell plugin for blender don't work with actual blender version to test with particles
i hope in future we can apply emitter to vdb file
