a simple Matte/shadow preset material would be very nice. The buttons matte and shadow in a standard material doesnt do the trick

So, do you mean a preset that internally enables both the Matte and Shadows features on a material?

Why don't you save a MXM material with those settings enables and you apply it (i.e. referenced if you prefer) to the object you want?
