Maybe this is not so important but I'm always about details like you, too 
In fact, these kind of problems need more intuitive controls. If I were the developer, I would also code an external realtime lens simulator as a small tool for representing these cold numeric relations with a visual approach. I've checked out your site, it's a good knowledge for a starter really. However the developers are busy with a lot of problems and they want us to know the rest. Maybe now we're OK but, think how many people will keep asking this question here
If you don't know a simple thing, others always want to laugh at first, however this is not the users fault. Technology must be presented with an enough knowledge beside.
