In V2.x the lightsources are translated to the Multilight Feature, by Material, which in my opinion is the best confortable way.
In V1.x they were working by Objects, and in most cases they were not that confortable, forcing the user to combine diferent objects to design the Multilight channels as desired. Additionally this could cause some problems calculating the intensity of the diferent Emiters materials. Nevertheless there are special cases in which it would be very usefull to divide Multilight channels by Objects. In case this could be an OPTION for the user, it will adjust to all the possible cases.
