Here's an idea. If I understand it correctly, multi-light just renders all the lights and we can modify their intensity afterwards, including sun & sky. So... could we just render 8 different sun & sky positions in the same rendering?

I mean, as far as I can understand, the MXI saves the info for each pixel according to the affect on it by the light and that's how it can change things afterwards. Just render it with as many differant sun and sky positions as you want. Sure it'll take longer, but then you can key frame everything, a true full morning, noon, night reel from one rendering.

Is this possible?

It could be true for Sun, but not sky (light intensity can be adjusted, not colors). You can already try this if you want to...just place emitters for all of your sun positions, use Physical Sky without sun...and then Emixer it up.
