There is a bundle special going on right now for Substance Designer + Bitmap to Material + 250 Substances here: http://www.allegorithmic.com/special-offers

I have also just completed a tutorial series for the Substance Designer software through VTC and I will be getting 10 free copies after it comes out -- I want to see more Maxwell users utilizing Substance Designer, so I will throw in a free copy of my Substance Designer tutorial series for any Maxwell user who also buys Substance Designer (to make it faster/easier to learn and utilize the programs together).

This should be of particular interest to those Maxwell users who use 3DS Max or Maya as those platforms support Substances directly.

Best,
Jason.

Jason,

thanks for the heads-up. I really glad to hear that you've done training for Substance, I'd love to get in to it. My only concern is that I use Softimage - is there an easy workflow for this or do I have to wait for a plugin?

You know, I wonder about that since they already have a good relationship with Autodesk it seems logical they would bring out Softimage integration -- and they are definitely growing and expanding the capabilities of the software fairly rapidly so I would not be surprised if that does come to pass soon... but you would have to ask them directly about that since I could not say.

In the meantime the workflow would be the same one I currently use -- use the free Substance Player app to output whatever bitmaps you might need... which is a fairly middling solution. On the one hand it is much more flexible than traditional texture variation/editing workflows, but on the other hand is nowhere near as powerful as what Maya, Max, and Unity users currently enjoy.

I am hopeful Maxwell would support Substances in the future as it would answer alot of the calls for procedural/vector capabilities in Maxwell materials -- but who knows what the devs are thinking here.

Best,
Jason.

Jason,

thanks for getting back to me.

It's a shame that Soft' always seems to be the last one on AD's list :(

I'd love to see procedurals in Maxwell (integrated with Soft'), here's hoping...

Where's the link to your tut's, I couldn't find it on VTC.

It's not out yet -- will probably be released closer to the end of the month (still in editing).

There is a new version of Substance Designer coming out in the next few days but I have already cleared it with Allegorithmic that what I show in my videos will not be changed... they are good people, remind me alot of the Maxwell team (which is a high compliment from me).

Best,
Jason.

Some nifty new features in version 2.5 released today:
  1. Link/Import mesh as a resource in sbs. These mesh can be displayed in the 3D view and used to extract information.
  2. New mesh information extraction feature. These information can be exported into bitmaps or svg and used in substance graphs. The following maps can be extracted:
    • Ambient occlusion (depending on the GPU)
    • World space normal
    • Curvature
    • UV to Svg mask

They are running another good sale on Substance Designer until May 15th here: http://www.allegorithmic.com/unitybootcamp (you don't need to use Unity for this deal).

Also they are accepting feedback here: http://allegorithmic.uservoice.com/foru ... -feedback- -- some of the suggestions so far are supporting Substances in Modo and C4D, if you are interested in those things drop a quick vote for them.

Best,
Jason.
