Hey Guys

Have you seen this update from Random Control? http://www.randomcontrol.com/arion
It's called Arion and renders from both the CPU and the GPU, even over network if you want more speed! (interactively)

I haven't tried it yet but it looks amazing! The speed is unbelievable!

I hope Next Limit is in the process of making something similar :)

Yea we've seen it but have You heard about this one: http://www.refractivesoftware.com/ Just 99€ It might be that faster is better but why spend 795€ if you can get same thing in 99€??? I would say that faster is better but faster and cheaper is even better.

I already got a license for octane, it looks good, strange UI... Btw, 99€ for the program, 500€ for a nice GPU card... and you get only 2Gb RAM...

Yes i've seen Octane, but the last time i saw the program, it was still in a beta stage and only had basic functions.

They have greatly improved! At least the gallery tells me that ;) I'm definitely going to try it! Thank you for reminding me.

I thought Random Control was one of the first to come with a finished product for unbiased GPU rendering, i was wrong and maxwell is even further behind then i thought..

Works fine here 8) I've got just gts 250 and that's enough. Must say that this gpu trend has been a life saver for me(industrial designer).
It's nice when you can make interior render with dof just in 10 minutes.. try it to do with Maxwell - no chanse 8)

That's enough? I've got a Quadro 580 but i'm sure it doesn't render an interior clean in 10 min. The simball provided takes more then 15 min to clear.
So apperently Quadro's aren't made for GPU rendering, a normal video card does a better job.

Was it easy for you to learn Octane? Are the settings logic if you're a Maxwell user?

Quadro vs GeForce makes no difference in CUDA rendering, other than the fact that Quadros often come with more memory. It's all about the number of CUDA cores and at what speed, and to a certain extent which family of chips.

GTS 250 = 128 CUDA cores
Quadro 580 = 32 CUDA cores
GTX480 = 480 CUDA cores

etc...

dual multiple gpus work with this? from what i'm reading, the ram on the graphics card is the limiting factor in the GPU renderer, right? Can that be overcome by adding more gpus? if two separate gpus don't work, what gpus that are two gpus on one card?

Yes, you can use multiple GPUs, however, the scene is limited to the lowest amount of RAM in any single GPU. So if you have a 512 MB card and a 2GB card, the scene can only use 512, but will process across both GPUs.

can it share ram on a dual gpu on a single card?

there will be maxwell GPU, or there will be no maxwell 3.0 just wait to sigraph. Then we will see.

no, each gpu is limited to it's own ram. a dual gpu card with 2gb ram will be split into two separate units with 1gb each. so it's better to buy two single cards with more ram.

Calico how do you handle the materials? the maxwell library or the vray library of materials are easily translate to octane or you need to create your materials from scratch? Does octane recognize any object with prevously assigned materials in other 3d application?
what's the workflow?
