well, i don't know about maya, but using the cinema4d plug-in it has 'always' been possible...
not only since v2.

as said, this is a cinema4d-material (that has a procedural noise, which is animated, in the displacement channel - ) that is converted for each of the 10 frames. so 10 mxs are written as usual - but in this case the maxwell material that is being generated is originally animated and so different in each mxs-frame.
this also is do-able in 1.7.1, as far as i can recall.

procedural textures are now supported???
i don`t think so...
the only way i know is to feed materials with a sequence of baked texture maps (pixel maps)...
this means wasting time and diskspace to produce and testing them...no real-time tweaking of parameters (i.e. ocean texture),
which is very important for animation-work...

dr.merman made some very useful melscripts for maya allowing you to feed in procedurals, which are automatically converted to pixelmaps on the fly (batchrender)...but i think he stopped this projekt

what a pity! it is on the wishlist since beta-stage...
