Lately i noticed that my stereo boxes bring out nuances in music that i completely miss out on with my headphones. So i'm thinking new ones are way overdue, if they can't compete with that.

Since a lot of you guys are interested in music and instruments, i thought this might be a good place to get some pointers. If you're part of an audio-forum, maybe you could even forward it to there. I don't trust reviews sites on this one, the ones i checked smelled bought-out or biased.

What i have in mind:
  • Purpose is listening pleasure, nothing else
  • No microphone needed
  • Plugs into stereo system, so it can suck amperage
  • Should be comfortable for prolonged wearing, i've had bad experiences with circum-aural leather type of pads that pushed on part of my ears
  • I'm thinking 50-100€/$, hopefully something that lasts
Any help welcome, thanks! :o

I've used Sony MDR-V6/MDR-V506s for many years. They can get to be pushing on your ears some after an extended time (i.e. 8 hrs or so) - AKG K 240s are a bit lighter on the ear, and they also sound a bit 'airier', whereas the Sonys are punchier, so depending on what you like, maybe that's a good way to go. As far as your 50-100$ range goes, both of those are right at the top, but I have never regretted buying the first pair I did (MDR-V6, probably about 20 years ago now), and they cost the same then as they do now, meaning, they were alot more expensive.

I'm biased though - I have never been able to wear in-ear headphones for more than a couple of hours.

Any Koss...their sound quality is amazing. Personally i have a Koss Sportapro $30 and for this price you will not find better. I also have two Sennheiser (present from friend), first the manufacturing quality is not very good and the sound is simply poor. If you can, try the Koss and I'm sure you will not be disappointed. I remember the first time one of my friend borrow me its Koss headphone, it was like a slap in my face, i was so surprise by the sound richness. The first thing i did the same day after the working time was to go to buy me a Koss.

I recommend AKG as well.
I have the Hearo Quadra 777.
I got used to it now, but I could not believe my hears when I started using it. It does wonders in hiding the effect that the soundsource is actually very close to your ear.
It sounds incredibly voluminous and bright.
The model is now old and has been replaced/upaded with the 787 which is around 140 Euro for a new one.
Sorry if this sounds like an advertisement but it continously blows me away.

i think an important question is if you need noise cancellation.. if you listen a lot in public transport or in other noisy places i would recommend to get a well closed headphone or one with active noise cancellation like these sennheiser

admitted i am a bit of a geek when it comes to sound.. and i got me a pair of etymotics er4p 2 years ago..
these kind of headphones are basically an earprotector with a micro speaker in it... you don't hear anything from the outside and the sound quality and resolution is outstanding.
they have a new model ER-6 now.. it is below 100 € maybe you find some reviews

there are also other companys producing "in ear" phones now, like ultimate ears and shure but i didn't read any comparisons lately.

if you don't like the plugs see these, i used the previous model for many years, and they are a good deal for the price and very lightweight and foldable :

I been without headphones for over a year now and listening to music in an ipod without headphones is no joy, because you can't really listen to any music without them. :)
So today i scraped up my savings from the bottom of my piggybank and went to the store to see what i could find, what i found were a pair of Koss PortaPro (black beauty edition) silly productname i know :D they were fairly priced at about 40 euro for what they could deliver and now when i plugged them in they make music sound like music and not just some random bits of noise.

These also look real nice! they come with a much higher pricetag of around 120 euro (ouch!)
