Will probably be my next DSLR (got the 450D), simply for the video functionality. I might buy it used in a couple years.

I have been reading the reviews  .. I promised myself not to buy the D90 (first generation of of SLR cameras with video)

Have you guys seen the Panasonic DMC-GH1
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0903/09030 ... dmcgh1.asp

I honestly would like to stay with canon or Nikon because of my lenses collection, but the Panasonic has custom lenses specifically for video (constant autofocus) and you can plug-in a better microphone

These CMOS sensor cameras use a rolling shutter which distorts and wobbles video
Not that they are bad cameras for photo great..but it depends on what you want the video for..if its for you family and fun video ..OK.. but for work.. esp for thindgs like matchmoving to composite 3d into.. then not so good as the pixels in the image arn't all caputured at same time and distort geometry..
Very Disapointing as I would love to have the new fullframeCanonMarkIII for both the video and pics here at work.. but alas i'll have to wait till we can afford both full frame DSLR and a CCD Panasonic HD camcoder

I first learnt of this issu here on Syntheyes mathmove forum:

in this forum look here for example videos: http://www.ssontech.com/content/skool.mov

ALSO Stu Maschwitz (from the Orphanage VFX shop) write on this issues in his blog.. also covers/reviews camera like the new panasonice DSLR:

Thank you for the info and the samples. This is very important to know.

thank you! I didn't know that.
the example you posted looks terrible. why is so bad? a quality like this would not even be accepted for fun videos ...
I'm planning on getting a 5D Mark II but that video just shocked me

i think what is posted in this thread is pretty old and it seems that technology has improved.

i have the canon eos 5d mark II and i havn´t noticed this behavior so far. (though i have not tested the video capabilities extensivly)
also if you have a look here:
http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2008/11/ ... mment-8831
this was all shot with the 5d markII and there are severall helicopter flight shots in there that look amazing. (still if you look in detail you see some artifacts, but no way like this sample movie)
so kami go for it - it´s a very good camera !

If you're doing any type of professional work, I wouldn't recommend holding the camera without some type of tripod.
Once you stabalize the camera, the wobbling goes pretty much away.

Take a look at the d90 with a merlin (steadicam)...

wow the video link was amazing.. and the helicopter shots were some at night.. but a linkon that page to the Canon5Dmark2 canon site..

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contr ... elid=17662

has this as one of the crits.. dated 4-5-09... its very confusing becasue I want one of these cameras.. and I was hoping to get the mark2.. ill have to go somewhere and rent/get a demo to truely see whats up with the issue.. I DO need it for matchmoving.. and itd be great not to have to take 2 cameras on a shoot have all in 1.. but still ppl complain of this issue- so it maks me hesitant..

(although the dude needs 65 mins continuous recording..GO BUY a dam hd camcorder..)for me i need 1-2 minutes max!.. esp formatchmoving only pic out a few second clip.. and even wen i shoot other videos.. (surfing/windsurf/skate/fun stuff) i rarley have a shot longr than 15mins

Rolling Shutter Issues Date: April 5, 2009

Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation
Cons: rolling shutter in video, no audio control or head phone jack, limited video recording time
I purposely bought this camera for the video image quality. Unfortunately, the video skips, or has a "rolling shutter" issue. At least a third of the clips I shot had this problem, which is just to high and problematic for the money.
I know, I know, it's not a video camera. But, once they come out with the next version it should be awesome for video.
Just include; 1. fix the rolling shutter issue. 2. audio controls 3. include 24P 4. Add multi-format recording that will allow match-up with NLE software. 5. Fix the limited time allowed for video recording. I need at least 65 minutes continuous recording. 6. Include a 16 x 9 wide HD LED screen for viewing. 7. Add headphone jack.

Thanks for all the info ! This 500D looks interesting if the video quality is good..

I'm also looking at the new HD-video capable DSLR to replace my 450D.. mainly for photography but also to shoot short clips with full lense, focus control and image quality, which is quickly expensive to get on an HD-videocam.

While were're in the subject, does any of you do time-lapse movies with DSLR? I did a few tests with 450D but the timelapse mode is controled via computer/usb connection, so it is not usable for outside shooting.. quite disapointing !

Does higher-end or recent Canon dslr have "unplugged" time-lapse option? It might only be a firmeware version problem..
It seems that Nikons have so and it makes me wonder about switching to Nikon..

Yeah, it's kinda stupid that basic custom shutter controls aren't included. This doesn't even require hardware, it should easily integrate through software...

Found an old timelapse on my server, i made a couple cleaner ones by now but they're too large to quickly upload. To not have it flicker you'd need constant exposure length or postwork*, there's also a variation in brightness in the mechanics/electronics themselves in ever shot.

Third party software allows for shorter intervals than the 5s set by Canon's EOS Software. 3s works safely with the 450D.

And eventually it'll kill your shutter, so slowly lay aside money for the next model :P

*there are some apps out there that can supposedly automate the process.
