I am being asked to render images at 1200mmx900mm at 200 dpi.

This works out at 9449x7087 pixels!

Could I get away with rendering these smaller? what is the rule of thumb on this?

I think a common advice is to render it half the size and blow it up with a program designed for this purpose.
