I was just pricing out what it would currently cost to put together a 16 core machine.

* There's no real deals to be had on parts with the exception of memory(prices have come down on FB dimms), .. so the pricing is what it is..

Motherboard: Supermicro X7QC3 : $1200.00
http://www.supermicro.com/products/moth ... /X7QC3.cfm

Processor: Intel Xeon 7350 Tigerton 2.93Ghz Quad $2500.00 x 4 : $10,000.00
Case/Enclosure [have to use proprietary]: $250.00 [this is a guess]
Memory: 16GB's : $800
PS: $500.00
HD's: 2 WD1500 Raptors + external Seagate 500GB : 550.00
Optical : 100.00
OS: 200.00
_______________

$13,600.00 [IMO, .. that's not all that out of control] ... ???

I guess that's the going rate on bleeding edge without having to network a farm, ... so, all that in a single box.
That's a banging machine .......

The best machine on the Benchwell page is similar, ..with this one being a tad quicker [2.4Ghz vs. 2.93Ghz]. So, .. this uber-machine would have an extra 8.48Ghz of processing, .... so I'm guessing it would come in around 3-4min. on the test scene.

The cpu price shocked me, i expected good news :O
16GB RAM for 800$? Prices sure have come down in that department!

And now, after all the relentless, daily dismantling of the whole thing, you seriously consider reassembling it all!?

Sandy ......... if your saying that the it's already been done,.... the comparisons are not even close.

The one Poweredge R900 is only 8 cores @ $15K, ...mine is under $14K with 16 cores. Sure, ..there are some differences with the peripherals and ram, ..but who cares???, .. we know what we want ....... and that's cores! The one machine that is comparable spec-wise is around $30K, ..that's double for the same cores. They can keep they're fancy SCSI drives, ... I'll build the thing myself , ..save the $$$ and still have 16 cores .

I'm sure people will still buy the vendor machines, ... but why ??? Fifteen-thousand dollars is serious money .....

All your doing is paying someone else to buy your parts and assemble the machine, ....... they don't actually produce ----- ANYTHING.

Edit: I take that back, ... I believe they make the case.

hey Stu, I thought you might be paying attention ...... :)

Yeah, ... the Pond differential blows . lol.

But if one was serious, ... it'd be just a matter of working with someone on the right side of the Pond ... ...hmmm. lol..

Whether is was a complete box or the safer bet of moving individual parts at your leisure. ;)

....and let's even go so far as saying that identical machines were being made, ... well, ... that's give one all kinds of room for price breaks. :P

In that case, .. I'm thinking 11.5-12.5K out the door for the sweet 16 !!! hahaha ...

Misleading , . ...its hard to tell what was priced out (2 or 4) on that page ......
Its says 'Upgrade to 4 processors' ..... so does or doesn't that $15K price have 16 cores ?

Even still, ......... The DIY version is cheaper .... ;)

I am looking into it , ... I really didn't think before today that it was possible, ..but now I see that with some fancy financing, .....it can be done!

so buying 1 computer for 14K with 16 cores, isn´t better to buy 4 octacores with 32 cores and set up a network ???

what is the advantage of just 1 computer?

thx firebird
