Well funds are finite, so a quadroFX 3500 is out of the question.......

Nvidia7900's are getting cheaper by the day, but the 8000 series has [mostly] directX 10 support.........I've been hearing a lot of comments on how hot the 8000's are when they're running......not something I want!

What I need is a mid-range workstation card........anyone got a recommendation or two they'd like to share?

if you can wait 2-3 months and 400-500€ ok for you i would recommend one of the next geforce series G92 (probably GeForce 9800)

G92 could be interesting for rendering too, cause they seem to have doubled precision support. maybe this could be a new chance?

I always like to mention ebay because I bought my quadro fx 3450 for 600 dollars brand new back when it was retailing for 1400.

I have to say eBay as well... I just put together a new CAD system. I bought an nVidia Quadro FX4500 for $700 (list anywhere between $1600-2200USD).

After a bit of research, I decided more money for a "CAD" card was the best path. To sum up what I learned; "CAD" cards and "Game" cards are fundamentally not much different. The difference comes in with the way "windows" are handled. Game cards are optimized (in hardware) for "single window". It's easy to see this; when running a game you use "one window" to run the game. When doing CAD work, it's necessary to have many (many) windows open at the same time. The CAD cards are optimized for this. There are those out there that use the high end game cards for CAD with no problems. But they freely admit that once they get past a couple of open components the system crawls... (BTW, I won't get into the "software switches and soldering resistors" onto game cards to make them "CAD" cards... I don't over-clock or count cycles either)...

I have an nVidia Quadro FX1100 in one of my other machines. I bought it (maybe) five years ago. I expected to find this card toally obsoleted. When I started looking around, I found it's still a top rated card for CAD. Given this, I had no qualms shelling out the money for a *4500.
