second question...

is anyone using modo 202 in conjunction with maya just as renderer ?

Hey Deadalvs, I have used it, would you like to buy a licence? Going cheap!! It works really well, it is just that the render node licences cost a fortune.

Seeing as Maxwell 1.2 is not likely to arrive this month we are buying Fry render and need funds. We were desperate for a working network rendering solution and they have one.. :D

I do not have free money for Fry - as i said it will become 600 euro for me... I do not want to run Windows just for Fry...

Ok. I am waiting till v1.2 and then i will decide...

hey Neil !

it's funny how fast You're hopping from renderer to renderer. :wink:

but that's cool, because not many people take so many risks and investments as You do just to have fun working and give the customer the wanted quality. i do think that's a service alone !!

* * *

i wrote to cebas this night and an answer came already this morning. since i am still student, i could purchase educational versions.

--> 95€ plus taxes for the «working license»
and 95€ plus taxes for (each) «render license».

You're right about the networking prices... damned.

so i could start «working» and «rendering» (whoa.) with 190€ (+).

i think You can not beat this price for render licenses ? maybe we can do a deal here...

* * *

but why did You quit fr ? what was the reason to abandon it ?

tell me about it's weaknesses......
the things that are NOT mentioned in their online presentations.

is it stable ? no... is it ROCK SOLID to render over the network ? even with large files ?
how fast is it with interior renderings, based on hdri sky lighting?

a few tips would be appreciated. it sounds all too good for me to be without a trap hidden.....

thanks !

* * *

by the way... fry looks really cool... does fry work with maya or max ?

thanks till now !

Hi Deadalvs

I am striving for perfection or at least a renderer that does all I want it to with a rock solid support behind!!

There is no way I can meet those prices, being a student must be nice :D 95 euros for a render lic is a bargin.

Final render is good, works well and distributive rendering works great. My main reason for switching is the rendernode lics. To licence all my rendernodes would cost over 2000 euros and after my renderdrive cock up funds are very short!!! (just incase any one is thinking of buying a renderdrive DON'T!!!)

I thought Maxwell was the answer but I have two huge animations to get by the end of this month and without 1.2 I am screwed so Fry render seems a good solution... I can run it on 10 machines (not procs) and it costs 395 euros...

At the moment it works with Max....but Maya will come.

super, Neil !

and thanks again...

yes, it's good fry and elektronik/indigo are around... a little competition is always good for the user... :)

NOONE using modo 202 ??

Speak to Ghiom on the renderART forum, he uses it.. I also read about something called modomotion which makes a link between Maya and Modo for rendering with Modo, not sure if it ever came off though...

ah, good idea.

i didn't know he was using it... i just wrote him a mail.

by the way.

did You ever try RenderMan ? which advantages/disadvantages speak for FR or RM concerning architectural (interior as a reference) renderings and integration in maya ?

is RM simple to use, as easy as FR or «as horrible» as MentalRay ?

anyone using turtle 3 ?

* * *

damned, too many nice renderers around, «behind» maxwell... !

Nope never used renderman, I did beta test renderman for maya but it is not really made for arch viz.

I also played with Turtle a while ago but it was as buggy as hell. They say that it is fixed now but I think I will stick to Maxwell or maybe Fry...

ordered trial/eval versions of turtle and RenderMan.

got turtle and first thought was: hey... a simpler MentalRay... !

on the first glance, it is a lot more logically built, but still has a lot of options...

a first test with heavy geometry, final gather and an .hdri map for IB crashed maya.

--> turtle's nearly out of the race.......

come here, RenderMan...

by the way... does fry seem to be faster than maxwell ?

but Neil....

honest question.

we all here know that maxwell is not really efficient for animations... «no matter how large the render farm is». maxer works as i know on an 80 machine dualcore farm, and i know he has/had a lot of troubles with it.

You have two large animations to do... !

why would You try fry which has the same philosophy and technical approach to rendering ? does it really have to be this quality ?

i'm just wondering... :roll:

what arsenal can You access ? i have a few computers here, two laptops, a quad and an older P4 which all can render, but still have a large risk finishing three perspectives in two days! how do You want to render «large animations» ?

*wonder*

For external animations Maxwell works fine. I have run some tests and I can render 640x480 frames out at 15mins/frame no problem. Interiors are a differnent thing, I can get acceptable images in 1 to 2hrs depending on the amount of reflective surfaces etc. The interior scene I posted last week rendered at 4000x3000 for 6hrs and was fine.

I have a fair amount of render power, and feel confident that in a couple of weeks I can have all the frames rendered.

One of my projects is going to have to be rendered in Maxwell anyway as it is fully textured and ready and there is no way I am going to change all the shaders!! I will have to find a way to render it without the new Maxwell 1.2. I have a plan, I just hope it works!!! I feel a lot of sleepless nights ahead.

Hope this answers your question.. :D
