I've just stumbled across indigo renderer from a thread on XSIbase.

It uses Monte Carlo and path tracing and even has network rendering.

And it's FREE! http://www.indigorenderer.com

To top it all they've just written a plugin for XSI!!

I am downloading now and will see how it goes...

I've been waiting two years for the Maxwell XSI plugin. I was promised it would be completeted before the end of 2005 by those at next limit and this was the reason for my purchase.

ok, it ain't pretty but it's my first output from XSI to indigo renderer.

You just create your geometry in XSI, apply materials (standard XSI or nk data!), set up cameras (f-stop and focal distance), set up lights (polygon object lights!) then use indigo helpers to attach custom parameter to these objects (so that indigo can understand them) and export an xml file. Drag this file on your indigo desktop shortcut and you get this, in about 15 mins.

The black edge to the sphere are bacause I was in a hurry and the sphere only has the default 8x8 subdivisions. The image isn't exposed correctly but as I said I was in a hurry to get it working! It also exports an exr file so that you can adjust exposure after rendering.

(kinda reminds me of the heady days of the good ol' beta!)

I'll post more when I get some time!

I just wanted to proove it was possible (and it is!). It's really simple and the next version of the plugin (this one is beta) should render direct form XSI.

I really excited about this engine (well mainly the plugin!).

Come on next limit, you've got competition!
