Hi Frances,

I deal with dozens of whining children during the school year.
Whining is not allowed. My typical response being "That's an ugly noise and I don't hear it".

If I were a parent, I would probably think of the following.......

1) Coloring books or car keys depending on age.
2) Duct tape or Valium, depending on local laws.

Do not try either at home innocent readers!
More constructive responses are advised! Consult local authorities before attempting to quiet smallish whining humans.

The worst thing you can do is to cave in and respond in some positive manner. That just trains the perpetrators to repeat the behavior. And repsonding positively every so often is even worse. Everybody knows the hardest behaviors to stop are those that result from intermittent positive reinforcement.

As I remind my friends with children "Three in the kitchen is harder than 20 in the classroom".

Good luck.

PS Have you tried playing OPERA. For some reason, it has an anticeptic effect with regard to whining. Somewhere between 80-100 DB, the beneficial effects are obvious. The perpetrators vacate the room.
