Yeah, all the elements are there (they are present) and I see the coin caustics have the right shape. Now it only needs tighter settings to even out the caustic areas that appear uneven.
Yeah, the caustics in itself look pretty good, just splotchy.
I have no idea how to brighten up those area light reflections either.. They're Brazil area lights, not geometry, but they're always pretty weak in brightness in comparison with the amount of light they give off..

Puuuh... and one more. Then i'm totally done.

Finalrender 10h 20m with P4 3.4.

As any other renderer, there is problems with anti-aliasing in
those extreme high contrast areas. :? But i think this is almost
best what you can get wiht FR.

ThomasAn: Thanks for this challenge. I have learned alot of Finalrender,
because i had to push everything out from it. I also learned that for this
kind of realistic renderings there is only one option - Maxwell.

You put a lot of work in it 8)
Thanks for all your effort in this challenge, I appreciate it :)

Yes thanks for this scene Thomas, it shows some pretty distinct differences between renderers, and I also had to fight a bit with Mentalray but learned a few things.....and reminded me why I like Maxwell so much, not just for the quality ;)

Ok - here's a couple from my Maxwell.
Setup was about as close to nothing as one could get - basic materials and basic emitters. Maybe 5 minutes.
The computer is an Athlon 2500 with 1.5Gb Ram

First image: 11H43Min (screen grab)

Second Image: 20H54Min

Thanks for this Thomas. Fun learning.

Cheers,
Ernest

Ok here's an attempt with Lightwave 8.5.
46mins [1-pass PLD] on an athlonX2+4800. [original image 1280x960]
DOF seems to be non-existent, but the scene scaled in @2000% and I haven't bothered to re-scale yet.......this'll hopefully fix the DOF problem.

Here's my second attempt, this time with RC5 (using complex IOR's.. not sure if that made much of a difference)

SL 18.67, 23h54m
P4 2.8 Ghz HT, 1Gb ram

I let it render overnight but to be honest, after about 3 hours the image was good enough I think to denoise (or if I rendered in a higher res, denoise/resize).

Interesting test Thomas! Thanks for putting the scene together. Here is my attempt. Still has noise on the rings and I'm not sure how accurate the caustics are inside the silver ring, it looks a bit odd to me.

SL 19

13hr

Dual P4 3.06
