ram question.

i use the ubuntu installer cd on which a ram test can be found.

one whole pass takes around 25 minutes and i let it work for 26 passes.

there was an error in pass 12...

is this a serious problem or how should i judge this problem ?

could this have been just a «hickup» in the voltage or something ?

[edit]

i need to say the sticks are the ones that worked good until now. the fucked up ones i still have to test... to see if they really have faults or it was something other.

...wow  this should be more than enough ...4x12v with 48A combined. Don't know this psu, but i think it is capable to deliver constant power. :D
deadalvs wrote: the temperatures are the same in bios and core temp, but not so interesting since there's no load in BIOS... :)
...i ment if the voltage displayed in windows matches the one you selected in bios.

...can you run memtest in windows? don't know, if this will make a difference with this board, but it's possible, that it needs the windows drivers to run stable
or if there is a memtest option inside the bios can you try this?

what are the settings for your ram? by spd or manual timing control? can you see your ram timings displayed in cpu-z? for testing i would ensure to set the timings to standart values.
if you get also errors in memtest under windows, i would set the whole system to standart values and test the ram again...

got a question here...

i'm hopping from 4 to 8 gigs of ram today.

it's a little different type of ram (still ddr2)

but since i have my system overclocked (the ram is not overclocked !) do i first have to reset the OC settings to the factory defaults and step up to the sweet spot balance between speed and stable system ?

or can i directly exchange the RAM and keep the rest as is ?

I think ram test under windows will evidence the same error.
If ram is under warranty I will definitely look for a substitution.
And if it is not under warranty but the pc is used more than to read e-mail or to write (ex. Maxwell for deadlines  ) I will look for a substitution too:
bad ram cause crazy errors, with no advices, no repairs.

Tested on my skin.

Just make sure you set the correct ram timings (or by SPD) if you put in a different brand/type. Other than that you should be fine, imo :o

deadalvs,

you're still on XBX2 right?

i am running the same board and upped to 8GB just a month ago..
(my ram is slightly overclocked 400@440mhz ECC from Kingston)

i replaced all memory modules with 2GB sticks, prices are so low.. i would not mix ram types/manufacture.

all i did was swap modules..(no bios changes) and nothing worked...
until i figured out that 8GB need a little kick on the voltage... had to set to 1.96V in bios absolutely stable since. 8)

But as you stated your ram is at stock speed .. might not bee necessary for you then...otoh a lot of OC ready ram needs more than the default 1.8V

see in your RAM specs. usually it is safe to go to 1.9-1.95... just in case your screen stays black like mine did...

hey thanks for the input !

i got the sticks and checked the bios settings and saw the clock speed of the old ram @ 667. then i removed all those 1 gig sticks and replaced em with the new 2 gig sticks.

reboot and stable. perfect !

though it makes sense that they may need a little more voltage if overclocked.

btw. do you get any significant benchwell improvement by OCing the memory ?

* * *

is anyone OCing an i7 cpu already ? i've just seen some dude went up to 5.5 GHz with the extreme version of the cpu .. !

in my setup the overcklocking of the ram results from changing the FSB speed.

i have multiplier at 12x290fsb that is not an optimal OC from the theoretical POV but i was going for 101% 24/7 stability....hece the high multiplier , the low fsb oc and the ECC ram

generally one should OC the ram along the CPU, otherwise you create a bottleneck in the system.

I had my cpu running beyond 3.6ghz, but it hardly got faster (But hotter  ) as the ram was falling behind.

..actually i can't believe that i missed 6 pages of watercool&OC talk until now... ..my machines are all watercooled...originally for noise reasons.. now that i started to use maxwell.. OCing is just a logical consequence...

btw. check andre's score at benchwell.. he's got a i7 @ 3.8ghz.....

i really hope intel releases a "skulltrail" for the i7... that will be the time my piggy bank gets slaughtered.. :P
