I finally tried this newest version of program and at first it was unusable for me (way too slow), but when I set it to use half my cores on my i7 the performance increased dramatically -- I've seen similar behavior in at least one other "multi-core" application... but I'm not sure if this is specific to my operating system (Windows XP 32-bit) or possibly a hardware issue.
Other multicore programs (including Maxwell) all work fine so I want to say it is something to do with Sculptris... the solution is pretty simple though:
Manually alter the config.txt file in the Sculptris install folder from the mt_maxthreads value of zero to a value of 5.
