Ahhhh.... they don't come out until June/July here and they are not nearly as ornate as the one you photographed. they start off as "grub worms" wich can wreak havoc on a lawn or vegetable garden.

Wild Eurasian Beaver:

we have similar creatures in Texas called "nutria". aka river rats.... striking similarity.
