Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

Max, you should read the installation guide pdf file. :)
There is demo license file in the installed folder.
But anyway, I don't know how can I use rfrk for mentalray.
There are too many things to learn these days.

I do have to say, they aren't kidding about v5 being fast compared to v4. This is absolutely a worthwhile upgrade in every way if you are a RealFlow user.

Agree! 5 makes 4 instantly obsolete.

guys ..

i've seen some of the realflow docs and the example with the lighthouse where they show all features being solved together .. the pocahontas solver with splashes and mist particles.

can maxwell render those mist particles somehow as sprites or how's that done ?

could someone tell me which features of the real flow render kit could cause problems when wanting to render with maxwell ? are there render kit features which only can be rendered with mental ray and renderman ?

greets !

However is it normal that you get these errors during startup ?

It's a restriction of the demo:

A demo license is built-in to the main RealFlow 5 software package. The demo version of RealFlow 5 has a number of necessary restrictions:

30 day time limit – a built-in limitation of 30 days counting from the moment the software is first opened.
Particle-based fluids limited to 100,000 particles
Grid-based fluids limited to 500,000 nodes
The XML Import/Export feature is locked.
Internal plug-ins will not work with the demo version, although connectivity plug-ins to other 3D platforms are available.
The Job Manager will not work with the demo version
Users cannot load workspace files that are not saved with this edition.
Workspace files from older versions of RealFlow can't be loaded either.
Workspace files saved with this edition can't be loaded in other editions.
There is no free RenderKit license with the demo version of RealFlow 5 – a separate RFRK demo version is available (see below)

As of now, the RFRK2 is not yet available for Maxwell, but the new RenderKit mesher inside of RF is great. It's now fully multi-threaded. I haven't tried finding a way to render mist with Maxwell, but I don't think it's possible, yet. I'm pretty sure they have plans for it.

hmm .. could you try for one minute ? .. *pleeease* .. ;)

maybe it's somehow possible to assign a quad to each particle which is always oriented to the active camera .. [?]

I just looked in RF5, and there is not an option to save out particles for the mist, it uses a proprietary .mtc file. So for now, with Maxwell, it looks like you would have to render the mist with the mental ray RFRK2 and comp it into your render/animation.
