I got a Space Pilot (for a ridiculous price) 3 weeks ago, but I'm not sure about it... I'm not lost for it...
More precisely I don't see so much how to use it...
I'm a hard keyboard's shortcuts user, so my right hand (I'm left handed) is always on the keyboard pressing keys and hte left hand is on my mouse...
If I put my right hand on the Space Pilot do I need a third hand ( ) for the keyboard?
Ok, they have programmable buttons on the device but they are only... 16!!!
And it is not possible to put them in combination too! Or am I missing something?
16 key shortcuts are nothing, even in SketchUp
So unless I find a way to really use it (I hope I'm missing something with this device) I'm going to sell it and maybe just buy the small one and put in front of my keyboard so I can press some buttons using my long fingers

My point is that with the Space Pilot I don't save all that time 3D Connexion is talking about, if every 2 seconds I need to leave the device to reach the keyboard and press my shortcuts...

.. i faced the same problem when i started using the cad man.. it only has 4 programmable buttons, which i hardly use now. I also use key-aliases with rhino all the time - to keep travelling distance low, and since normal keyboards take up so much space i use this micro keyboard from cherry for many years now...

also feels much more comfortable when typing with one hand only.
With the left hand on the keyboard most of the time I use the CadMan not constantly but in certain situations where normal mouse orbiting is not sufficient.
... but I certainly wouldn't mind another two arms either

That's exactly the reason why I don't use such a controller. I would use it if I could drive it with one of my feet .

At this point what I need is only a large keyboard for my feet!
I'm thinking about my boss: I already brought a stokke chair in the office and he looks at me as I'm crazy; with something like this I will be get immediately fired!!!

I use the Nostromo Speedpad N52 at work and at home. I was getting serious rsi in my left arm a couple of years ago from reaching across my wacom to my keyboard. It was getting real bad, so I looked around for something with enough buttons to minimize my need for reaching for the keyboard. I love it and couldn't work without it now. It has 16 buttons, a scroll wheel and a d-pad. It has macro functionality, and you can make individual profiles for all your programs.

And if you want to impress a gamer teen, the new version has fancy blue backlit keys...

Wow, that's a cool thing AWOL. Guess I'll have to switch to one of those when my mouse arms get even worse. Have you tried Sjukgymnastik?

I use one of these old models from 3DConnexion. Got it second hand, and I love it. However, It doesn't work that good now when I switched to Mac.

Actually, now that I use the Nostromo, the need for Sjukgymnastik has decreased radically...

AWOL: That thing looks like something from Star Trek i'm sure it's great, would be nice to try it sometimes. Have you tested it in any games ?

Speaking of Spacenavigator now, perhaps it's time NL implements support for it in Studio. It would probably do good for Studio what do you guys think ? is it interesting ?

Max: Yep, my coworkers used to drop "humourous" comments about it and call it The Robot Hand... But I'd rather take jokes than RSI.

It works fine in games as well, but I mostly play my XBOX360 nowadays. I need a new home computer...

Hehe, i bet they do AWOL i heard RSI is not fun to have.. and go and buy a real homecomputer so you don't have to sit with a poor 360 to play games on, think of the games coming for PC such as Spore!

Btw, i recieved the 3dconnexion thingy today, this thing is difficult to control not as easy as i thought it would be hehe, but lotsa fun in Google Earth! time to try it in Rhino now.

Max, right now I actually prefer sitting down in my bean bag in front of the tv playing 360 instead of swearing over all the problems with drivers and glitches that seem to haunt the last couple of pc games I played. Sitting around messing with BIOS settings is quite far from the relaxation and entertainment I strive for...

But sure, I drool all over the graphics of the latest batch of pc games. I'd like to play Crysis for instance...

Max: Recommended settings in Rhino:

Rhino Options -> View -> Spaceball

See that "Allow tilt" is unchecked. That'll help you get started.. and then, you can adjust more settings with the driver, such as sensitivity, which way is zoom and which is pan etc.. but you probably allready got this figured out..
