sorry to hear that, but for all others: this one seems easy to avoid - use a firewall.

even if it's only a personal fw like zonealarm. even the win fw should do the trick.

Of course i was using a firewall - Windows plus Spysweeper. I previously used Zone Alarm. Thats the point - not all firewall/virus/spyware software detects the same traces. This virus is difficult to trace, but extremely damaging. Looks like i've fixed it now - 3 days on.

according to m$ this virus can only operate if it finds an open port on your machine. i would stick to zonealarm, it's by far more reliable than windows' own firewall.

btw a firewall doesn't detect any traces, it just closes down these ports, regardless of who or what is knocking on your door.

I use Zone alarm too.. the only problem I have with is LW... It won't start if zone alarm is active.. I tried all I could think of... I am thinking the LW hub between layout & modeler is responsible... :?

Its frustrating that i cant use more than one firewall etc at a time. I.e. AVG is quarantining files that bitdefender cant find but bitdefender still finds some of the files that AVG stores in its vault and i get about 50 warning pop ups every time i startup.

I must admit i never used any AV and simply have the Windows Firewall and that of my router; Sasser aside i never caught anything.

I have used bitdefender for over two years now.... and I am *very* happy.

Prior to that I was using Zone Alarm and CA-Antivirus, but this is no more, since the bitDefender suite can do all of the above in one and it has one of the highest ratings for detection.

Bitdefender has found 8 virus' and cant take any action, but its display window is too small to display the entire link for me to find and delete it. Useful.

hmm, what are the default actions you have in the settings ?
Is there a "move to quarantine" action in there ? (it should be in the settings under Antivirus-->Custom level-->Action to take )
