I don't know, I guess that if used as source of light/reflections in rendering would give the exact same result in a ldr format. unless, I guess, you crank up its current range well above 1.0.

No it will give different results, depending on how wide an HDR curve you define for it, given the input files. The assembler has no idea that you faked it.

well, you can't. debevec's light probes, for example, are full 360 degrees panoramas (while the one in that tut is not), so you can transform them in lat/long format and have them remapped correctly as environment.
when you use a hdri as environment (both for illumination and reflections), you want it to actually represent all the surrounding environment of your scene.

Yeah i know... so what's the hdri in that tutorial used for if it doesn't represent a full surrounding? Or are they just demonstrating with one view for simplicity.
